Ok fuck ok listen first: I’m sorry I didn’t see this message before! Second, I begun writing and then I have no idea what happened, this is a bunch of disconected impressions I have on the position of figurative art in elvish society, I’m sorry this became such a mess ;A;

This was really interesting to read (and other people comments also)!
I think about art of elves often. Here are so many points i agree with in your post, but in general my own impression is slightly different.
I personally don`t think elvish art is analog of our real world`s medieval/Renaissance art. I mean elves had so much time and
opportunity for self-cultivation and pure creative process during Years of the Trees. Their art could not be frozen, it had evolution (though rather slow) going through different stages, developing from one style to another (same as real human art during centuries) and reached an incomparably greater heights.
So in my opinion medieval art seems too simple for elves. Style which suits elvish aesthetics the best is Art Nouveau. Look at all that stunning decorative works of that period, accessories (Lalique designs is the first thing that comes to mind), tableware, women dresses, look at perfect ornaments, lines and curves (ok, Art Nouveau fan is here :) All that are so elvish, wouldn`t you agree?
I share your thoughts that elves like book decoration. In my imagination though it`s more like not medieval miniature but books with Morris` or Berdsley`s graphics (such as famous Le Morte D`arthur). Except that fact elves would make such books by hand, not printed.
And speaking of Morris I can associate some works by Arts and Crafts Movement and Pre-Raphaelite art with elves too.

Aaaaah those are some great points!! I certainly agree with you!!

I totally envision a lot of Morris/Art Nouveau when I envision elvish art (and also maybe a bit of Romantic/Post-Imperial ornamentation?? fancy elves are fancy hahahaha ). I was trying to think more regarding the aesthetics of painted art but yes, I think you are right regarding their decoration being more sophisticated…. In a cleaner, maybe even more mathmatical sense, maybe? I mean, surely their techniques of producton would be far more elaborate than the ones we hade in medieval Europe, as you said they had eons to develop. Its cool because Morris’ side of the romantism was very inspired by medieval aesthetic, so it works perfectly, though I think the elves would use brighter colors and maybe a lot of golden and silver ink in their works as well… aaaah I love imagining them decoration beautiful books *-*

ps.: I’m not a native english speaker, but your english seemed pretty good to me!

isn’t that what happened to Elwing?

elwing and tuor, ulmo bffs?

elwing and tuor in a seagull observation club

elwing and tuor making mediocre seashell necklaces for their romantic partners

elwing and tuor almost drowning after swimming too far in the open sea and uinen having to drag them back

elwing and tuor stop eating fish forever

elwing and tuor invent surf in aman

Medieval computer
This is a volvelle, a medieval device that allowed you to calculate the phases of the moon and the latter’s position in relation to the sun. The dials, with their charming depictions of moon and sun, tell you what you need to know. What’s most remarkable about the device is not so much its crafty nature - it consists of complex layers of rotating disks - but that it is usually fitted inside a medieval book. Some are so bulky that they pierce the adjacent pages. What a surprise it must have been for the medieval reader who thumbed through such a book for the first time. Turning a page, he or she was confronted with an ingenious piece of machinery. A medieval computer.

OMFG Juliana XDDDD Let me just add this:

The Valar probably has that copies as their guide.

HEREFF I AM CRYING THIS IS PERFECT AND SO TRUE!!!

“How are we going to fix the Eldar?”
It was a question no one thought would ever need asking. But, in light of recent events,  the Valar thought it was crucial to ask such a thing.
“Have you thought, brother,” Ulmo was saying, “That the Eldar don’t need fixing and we should just let them settle their disputes by themselves?”
Leave it to him to come up with the most hair-brained ideas.
“Don’t be ridiculous!” Varda scoffed, “The Eldar obviously need our assistance! They’re children after all!”
The mutters of assent that arose from the others caused Ulmo to sigh loudly.
His siblings truly were idiots.
“I’m sorry sister, but I must agree with Ulmo on this.” Oromë said, “It would better if we let the Eldar sort it out themselves rather than interfering.”
At least Oromë had some sense in him.
“Yet if we do nothing they will think we sit idle and care not for them.”
Manwë, on the other hand, did not.
And as Eönwë was sent out to bring Fëanáro to them Ulmo shared a look of distaste with Oromë.
Their siblings clearly needed a guide to the Eldar.
